Rentschler Biopharma and Vetter have unveiled what they call the Xpert Alliance. The contract developing and manufacturing organizations (CDMO) say the affiliation is a “joint visualization” of ongoing successful strategic cooperation.

Rentschler Biopharma of Laupheim and Milford, Massachusetts, and Ravensburg-based Vetter, have been working together since mid-2020. At that time, the two companies pooled their expertise in an effort to create long-term value that allows their clients to bring complex products to patients more easily and rapidly. They say the visualization is designed to “bring to life” this joint and successful effort.

Both companies reflect years of German experience and expertise in contract manufacturing. Each one has been active in pharmaceuticals for at least seven decades. Vetter currently provides aseptic fill finish for injectable pharmaceutical and biotech products. Rentschler Biopharma describes itself as a “… leading CDMO, offering process development and manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals as well as related consulting activities, including project management and regulatory support.“

The kind of expertise Rentschler delivers came to the fore during the COVID-19 pandemic. In October 2020, the company agreed to serve as the CDMO for BioNTech, one of the first developers of an innovative mRNA vaccine against the novel coronavirus. The initial project had Rentschler Biopharma responsible for “key aspects of cGMP (current good manufacturing practice) drug substance manufacturing of BNT162b2, the mRNA-based vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 that is being developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.“

Rentschler Biopharma was also in charge of downstream processing to provide highly purified drug substance. This involved removing impurities and maximizing the amount of mRNA harvested from the initial production process. This was carried out at the company’s headquarters in Laupheim. When the accord was signed, Rentschler CEO Dr. Frank Mathias said, “As a cGMP service provider with more than 40 years of proven manufacturing expertise, we are well-suited to work with BioNTech to make their ground-breaking science a medical reality and will work tirelessly to this end."

Rentschler and Vetter’s Xpert Alliance is just one example of the strength Germany’s medical biotechnology companies have in contract manufacturing and research and development.
